Best electric kettles in India

Before I share my recommendation of India’s best electric kettle brands, let me first answer a few basic questions about electric kettles.

What is an electric kettle?

A kettle is a device or a container that is used for boiling water. It has a lid, handles and a spout. In the kitchen, we used this kettle on a gas stove to boil water. Read interesting facts about kettle here. An electric version of the traditional kettle is called an electric kettle.

The electric kettle consists of a thick conductive coil at the bottom. It heats up when electricity is passed through it. The turning of electrical energy into heat energy is what boils the water in the kettle. Since the electric kettle almost instantly boils the water, India’s most favoured small kitchen appliance.

Are electric kettles better than stovetop kettles?

Yes! Boiling water in an electric kettle is much better than boiling water in a stovetop kettle or pan. It is energy efficient as it consumes fewer resources. Therefore it is a more economical option. It is faster, i.e. it takes a lesser amount of time. It is less messy, i.e. no utensils to clean afterwards. Electric kettles are safe, i.e. young adults can also use an electric kettle. It is better for the environment as it uses fewer resources.

Buyers’ Guide: What to look for when buying the best electric kettles in India

Everyone should have an electric kettle in their kitchen. It’s beneficial and convenient! But before you buy an electric kettle, here are a few guidelines that you should keep in mind before purchasing an electric kettle for yourself.

The following are the things to remember when you’re planning to buy an electric kettle for yourself.

Boiling speed of electric kettles

One of the main reasons I prefer an electric kettle is the speed at which it boils the water. I switch it on, and within 2-3 minutes, I have boiling water. Thus, an electric kettle is handy for a fast-paced life.

Every manufacturer has different claims on the speed of their electric kettles; as long as it is within 2-3 minutes, you should be good. Remember, the rate also depends on the capacity.

Size of electric kettles

The capacity and size of the electric kettle are other essential factor you should consider before buying. Get a kettle of the size that suits your needs.

If you’re looking for something to boil a mug of water for tea, coffee, etc., then go for a good 1/2 litre (0.5L) to 1 litre (1L) kettle. It would heat up faster and keeps it warm for a long time.

I prefer 1.5 litres (1.5L) to 2 litres (2L). It does take more time, but I can do so much more with it. For example, I can boil water and use it in my hot water bottle, etc.

Durability, Material and Weight of electric kettles

Electric kettles are made of plastic, glass or metal. Each type of material has its pros and cons. In the end, the durability, material, weight, aesthetics and quality of an electric kettle is a personal choice. So pick the one that compliments your style.

Following are a few of the pros and cons of each material type.

Plastic electric kettle

Pros

  • Lightweight.
  • Easier to carry.
  • Cheaper in price.
  • The exterior doesn’t become hot.

Cons

  • Not very durable.
  • It can influence the taste of water if made from cheaper quality plastic.

Glass electric kettle

Pros

  • Aesthetically beautiful, you can see the water boiling.
  • More durable than plastic.
  • Medium price range.

Cons

  • It needs to be handled with care.
  • The exterior can heat up, so be careful.

Stainless steel electric kettle

Pros

  • Very durable and sturdy.
  • Looks aesthetically beautiful.

Cons

  • It is heavier, so not easy to carry around.
  • The exterior can heat up, so be careful.
  • It can be expensive.

My style and preference are stainless steel kettles because they are more durable, and for me, stainless steel has a certain charisma. 😎

Cost of electric kettles

Again, this is a personal preference. There are electric kettles under ₹ 1000, and there are more expensive ones. The cost will depend on the capacity and also the features provided.

As per my experience, an electric kettle under ₹ 1000 is suitable for daily use, but they don’t last too long. But these kettles will also get the job done, so go for it if you have a budget constraint. For college students living in the hostel, an electric kettle under ₹ 1000 is a good option.

If budget is not an issue, then a good kettle would come to around ₹ 2000. I would recommend looking for this price range. The electric kettle will last longer and will have all the necessary features.

My kettle is an expensive one, but what to do, it was love at first sight. 😍

Additional features in electric kettles

There are some additional features that you might not get in all the electric kettles. More features mean higher costs. So check out if you need these other features or not before buying your electric kettle and paying extra for it.

Auto-shutoff – This feature shuts off the kettle automatically when the water reaches boiling temperature. For me, this is a must-have feature. If your kettle doesn’t have this feature, you need to keep a constant check on the kettle and turn it off manually when the water boils. It is so convenient and safe. Make sure this feature is available in your electric kettle.

Temperature options – In some kettles, you can set the temperature. This feature is handy if you’re looking to boil the water to a particular temperature. But honestly, how many times do you require specific heating temperatures in general use? So I feel it’s a good-to-have feature, but not necessary.

Cordless – Wherever you’re planning to keep the kettle, check the electric outlet distance from this location. The cord with the kettle is not too long, so check the label for its length/dimension and ensure it is needed. Cordless electric kettles are also available. You can go for them if that’s what your situation requires.

How to take care of an electric kettle

Follow these steps to take care of your electric kettle

  • Turn it off when not in use.
  • Keep the interiors of your kettle clean.
  • Keep the exteriors clean.
  • Children should not be handling electric kettles.

Let’s discuss these above steps in detail.

Electric kettles are quite a handy appliance to have, both in the kitchen and outside the kitchen. However, you should also know how to maintain them to maximise their lifetime and make sure you get the best of what your kettle has to offer.

Thankfully, electric kettles are pretty low maintenance.

Following are some basic steps that you can follow to take good care of your electric kettle.

Switch it off when not in use

This one is pretty self-explanatory. It would help if you always switched off all your electric appliances when not used as it lowers their lifespan. While these changes might not be visible immediately, you will be able to feel a difference in its performance after a year or two of usage.

Also, switching it on when it’s empty will lead to overheating the coil, eventually damaging the device due to its heat. This carelessness might even lead to fires if you aren’t careful, so make sure to double-check.

Thankfully, electric kettles come with an auto switch-off function that automatically turns the device off when it’s not filled with liquid. This feature protects from accidental damages.

Cleaning

Over time, minerals start to accumulate on the inside surface of your electric kettle due to hard water, which is common in India. This buildup would eventually prevent the heating coil from working correctly. Hence, it would help if you cleaned your kettle inside and out at least once or twice a month, depending on how often you use it.

You can use a slightly wet clean cloth or a dry cloth if you’ve just used it. But first, make sure the device is at room temperature. You can also use a toothbrush or a bottle brush to scrub out stains in or on the kettle.

Getting rid of mineral buildups can be a hassle. However, lemon juice or a vinegar solution will help you get rid of the stain quickly, as the acetic acid (or citric acid) can easily dissolve the mineral buildup. All you need to do then is wipe it off with a microfiber cloth.

FAQ

Following are some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are electric kettles safe?

There are risks because you’re boiling water near an electric outlet. Still, all such risks can be easily mitigated by following safety guidelines in the instruction manual. Today, good quality electric kettles use food-grade materials, quality standards, etc. So it is safe to use. Therefore always go for quality rather than buying a cheap one.

What are the best electric kettle brands in India?

Many brands sell electric kettles in India, but you can trust the following brands for the best quality – Philips, Morphy Richards, Kent, Prestige, Orpat, Havells and Butterfly.

Are electric kettles more energy efficient?

Yes! An electric kettle takes way less energy to boil water as compared to a stovetop kettle. An electric kettle consumes less electricity than a stovetop kettle using gas to heat the same amount of water.

Do electric kettles use a lot of energy?

An electric kettle consumes around 1200W, which is far more efficient than a gas or induction stove.

Can milk and eggs be boiled in an electric kettle?

Yes, some electric kettles can quickly boil milk and eggs. Check the user manual to ensure your kettle supports this functionality before trying it out.

How often should the kettle be cleaned?

The frequency should depend on how many times you use your kettle. If you’re using it daily, you should clean it out at least once a month. As minerals accumulate over time, a thorough cleaning with lemon juice or vinegar should be done at least 3-4 times a year.

How much time will it take to boil water?

An electric kettle generally takes around 2-3 minutes to boil water. However, this also depends upon the efficiency of the appliance and the amount of water being heated.
